RPS Presentation, November 11, 2026– Dr. Allyn May- Kin Fahd’s Invitation to Become Chief of Surgery.
Dr. Allyn George May was the first founder and director of the Organ Transplant Department at the University of Rochester Medical Center in 1965. That year he performed the first successful kidney transplant there and proceeded to develop a highly respected reputation with over 200 kidney transplants in succeeding years. His success and reputation led him to be sought out by King Fahd of Saudi Arabia to become Chief of Surgery at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh. This experience was so unique and informative that he offered to share it with RPS.
Professional Highlights & Background
- Affiliation: He was a Professor of Surgery and part of the faculty at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
- Specialties: Dr. May was highly involved in the early days of transplantation surgery at URMC, including kidney transplants. He worked closely with Dr. Charles Granville Rob, a renowned vascular surgeon.
- Training: He was Dr. Rob’s ninth American chief surgical resident.
- Academic Work: Dr. May is the author of “The Joyful Life of Charles Granville Rob: Surgeon, Soldier, Scientist”.
